Possible detection of a magnetic field in T Tauri

چکیده
Medium-resolution (R ≃ 15000) circular spectropolarimetry of T Tauri is presented. The star was observed twice: on November 11, 1996 and January 22, 2002. Weak circular polarization has been found in photospheric absorption lines, indicating a mean surface longitudinal magnetic field B‖ of 160±40 G and 140±50 G at the epoch of the first and second observations respectively. While these values are near the detection limit of our apparatus, we belive that they are real. In any case one can conclude from our data that B‖ of T Tau does not significantly exceed 200 G, which is much less than surface magnetic field strength of the star (> 2.3 kG) found by Guenther et al. (1999) and Johns-Krull et al. (2000). We discuss possible reasons of this difference.

Magnetically modulated accretion in T Tauri stars
We examine how accretion on to T Tauri stars may be modulated by a time-dependent ‘magnetic gate’ where the inner edge of the accretion disc is disrupted by a varying stellar field. We show that magnetic field variations on time-scales ≪ 10 yr can modulate the accretion flow, thus providing a possible mechanism both for the marked photometric variability of T Tauri stars and for the possible co...
متن کاملA Physical Limit to the Magnetic Fields of T Tauri Stars
Recent estimates of magnetic field strengths in T Tauri stars yield values B = 1–4 kG. In this paper, I present an upper limit to the photospheric values of B by computing the equipartition values for different surface gravities and effective temperatures. The values of B derived from the observations exceed this limit, and I examine the possible causes for this discrepancy. Subject headings: s...
متن کاملSpectropolarimetry of the Classical T Tauri Star TW Hydrae
We present high resolution (R ≈ 60, 000) circular spectropolarimetry of the classical T Tauri star TW Hydrae. We analyze 12 photospheric absorption lines and measure the net longitudinal magnetic field for 6 consecutive nights. While no net polarization is detected the first five nights, a significant photospheric field of Bz = 149± 33 G is found on the sixth night. To rule out spurious instrum...
متن کاملPolarization of Fir Emission from T Tauri Disks
Recent observation of 850μm sub-mm polarization from T Tauri disks opens up the possibility of studying magnetic field structure within protostellar disks. The degree of polarization is around 3 % and the direction of polarization is perpendicular to the disk. Since thermal emission from dust grains dominates the spectral energy distribution at the sub-mm/FIR regime, dust grains are thought to ...
متن کاملOn the alignment of Classical T Tauri stars with the magnetic field in the Taurus-Auriga molecular cloud
In this paper we readdress the issue of the alignment of Classical T Tauri stars (CTTS) with the magnetic field in the Taurus-Auriga molecular cloud. Previous studies have claimed that the jet axis of active young stellar objects (YSO), projected in the plane of the sky, is aligned preferentially along the projected direction of the local magnetic field. We re-examine this issue in view of the ...
